[“Word Sculpture” from page 200-201 of Beat Spirit by Mel Ash….

Take 50 blank cards & 100 words from your vocabulary, words that will represent your personal universe… 80 of the 100 words will be divided evenly between sight (black, clear, etc), sound (thunder, piano, etc), taste (curry, salt, blood, etc), touch (sand, skin, concrete, etc) and smell (pine, lavendar, cologne, etc) = 16 to each scent essentially. Be creative and personal.

Then add 10 words of movement such as swim, carry, fly, etc. The remaining 10 words are assorted choices for you to decide upon. These could be heroes (Jesus, Buddha, Elvis, etc), invented personal names (Sushi, Potfatagama, etc), birds, plants, totems, symbols, favorite dinosaurs, personal obsessions (Sarah Jessica Parker), abstractions (beliefs, God, etc).

None of the 100 words should have –ing endings. At least one of these last 10 words should be two body parts significant to you.

Now write the words at the ends of the cards, one at each end. Shuffle them and pick three to lay out in front of you. You will see the words and beliefs that come from you arranged in new way!]
